Environmental performance at manufacturing scale.
Tharos works with Muntons, the British malt and malted ingredients specialist whose environmental programme spans agriculture, energy generation, manufacturing, waste and supply-chain carbon.
Total energy-related Scope 1 and 2 emissions across Muntons' UK sites were 56% lower in 2024 than the 2010 baseline.
Almost half of operational energy consumption reported in 2024 came from renewable sources.
Muntons reported that 99.97% of solid waste was diverted from landfill during 2024.
Agricultural products were reported as sourced to third-party environmental or social standards, including Red Tractor / SAI Silver.
Energy is one of the biggest manufacturing questions.
Malting is energy intensive, particularly because heat is required during processing. Muntons has invested in renewable-energy infrastructure at its UK sites, including biomass energy centres alongside anaerobic digestion and solar generation.
Its original target was to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% against a 2010 baseline by 2025. That target was reached early, in 2022.
Measurement matters more than green language.
Sustainability claims become much more useful when the underlying performance is measured, reported and capable of external scrutiny.
Muntons publishes environmental KPIs covering energy, emissions, waste, sourcing and other areas. Its carbon data is externally validated, and its environmental and energy-management systems are independently certified.
Muntons received the King's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in recognition of work to reduce environmental impact across both its own operations and the wider agricultural supply chain.
